Immaculate Conception Church restoration nears completion

Since 2020, Rangel Construction Company has been working with Fr. Gregory Bartholomew, FSSP, at Immaculate Conception Church in Rapid City on a grand project to restore and beautify the interior of the historical church building.

At a basic level, the 116-year old structure needed the electrical infrastructure redone, and new ordinances called for the building to have a fire sprinkler system. Review of the structural integrity of the building resulted in a requirement to reinforce the original choir loft with a network of steel beams pocketed into the original sandstone walls.

Conception-ChurchA new HVAC system was also retrofitted within the curved choir loft space, and a new sound system was installed throughout the nave, vestibule, and basement areas. Once the basic and foundational needs of the building were addressed, Fr. Bartholomew was able to focus on the primary goal of the project, which was to restore and beautify the interior. For the design of these renovations, professional artists and designers from around the world were consulted.

To date, renovations have included plaster restoration, painting, stenciling, canvas artwork, ornamental lighting and chandelier, inlayed wood flooring and refinishing, and pew refinishing. The final phases of work will include interior and exterior door replacements, ceiling trim work and details, and adding ornamental details to the confessional.
