Diocesan Pastoral Center

Project Description:

Project Summary

In January of 2019 the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City openly solicited for construction management services for the building of its new Pastoral Center.

Seven local firms responded, and Rangel Construction was one of the final three that was selected for an interview.

One week after this interview process, the Most Reverend Bishop Robert Gruss gave a personal call to Mario Rangel to inform him that Rangel Construction was selected for the project.

Later in 2019, the Diocese secured the purchase of a 32,000 square foot facility, formerly the downtown branch of Black Hills Federal Credit Union. Rangel Construction went to work in February in assisting the Diocese and architect ARC International of Rapid City in assessing the building and developing a conceptual construction cost estimate. From there we worked through each phase of the design, updating our cost estimates for accuracy. Upon completion of the design, Rangel Construction and the Diocese were able to execute a contract GMP for just under $2.1 million.

After a project blessing and Mass by the Bishop himself, work on-site officially began in September of 2019.  The construction process involved a significant transformation of the old drive-thru space into fully enclosed  meeting spaces and a retail space for a religious goods store.  The second floor central office space was completely reconstructed and transformed into the Pastoral Center’s chapel.  Two areas of the building’s high roof  also underwent alterations and additions with structural steel and new glazing systems.  After working through the fall and winter seasons, Rangel Construction achieved substantial completion of this project in late April of 2020.
